| On January 14, 2005, Tabitha completed Math 1 from Saxon Publishers. Tabitha was very excited to be completing it and could not wait to move on to Math 2. She mentioned she was graduating to the next level and this gave us an idea. To celebrate the end, the day after she finished Math 1, we created a math treasure hunt by putting clues throughout the house that consisted of word problems based on toys, books, DVDs and household items. When she came up with the right answer, she received the the amount of the answer in the form of coins. For example, if one was 9+7 and she told us it equaled 16, she would receive 16 cents. She loved doing the treasure hunt and spent the time going from one clue to the other singing "I'm on a treasure hunt, I'm on a treasure hunt, hi-ho the merry-o, I'm going to get some money!" to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell. Once the hunt was over and she added up all her coins, she was able to shop in the Mom Store. But it was a bit different today. Usually she is allowed to buy only one item with her change. Today she was able to buy as much as she could afford. After she shopped, we got the graduation ceremony set up. Our chosen processional song was "Clap Your Hands" by They Might Be Giants and when the music started, Tabitha walked down the hallway carrying her Math 1 book. When she got to Chris in the living room, she handed over the book, received a certificate of achievement, a handshake, and her Math 2 book and was officially graduated to the next level. She loved it all and looks forward to her next graduation. | |
