12/09/2005 Archived Entry: "What child is this who lays to rest"

Shoes are not necessary for babies until they walk outside. My baby, the walker, has shoes for holiday pictures. But last week we went to the park and I figured the shoes would be a good idea. But they are hard soled and she cannot and will not walk in them. She won’t even try and in fact, hates to stand at all if they are on her feet. Soft-soled shoes are all the rage with the cool parents right now, but sadly, they are leather. It’s next to impossible to find any soft soled baby shoes that a cow did not have to die for. We visited an Asian baby store at the mall today and we found something that I hope will work for Daisy.

Shoes aside, Daisy’s walking has turned her into a completely different child. It’s like she’s finally accomplished everything she can physically and her personality can shine through. Now when we turn up the TV volume due to Daisy’s volume, it’s because she’s chattering and squealing with joy as opposed to loudly whining and crying. She’s even being sociable which she has never done. Last night at dinner she waved to people before they acknowledged her, she was actually trying to get their attention. Today at the mall, Santa’s elf took her from me and she was fine with that. Oh, she didn’t want anything to do with Santa, but really, few 10 months old do. She sleeps in my arms and not only seems to like it, but prefers it sometimes. She really changed, and though I don’t want to say for the better as that does her a disservice, I will say it is a positive change.

Just to continue this as an online baby book entry, we think Daisy may be saying her first word, which would be ‘hi’. It usually sounds like ‘ha’ but is always accompanied by a wave and at the times of greeting. I’m still not 100% sure it’s really her talking, I’d like to give it a little more time to tell. I will say that it’s amazing how many times it sounds like she’s talking though they have to be coincidental sounds. The other day I was on the phone with Chris and after we hung up, Daisy grabbed my cell phone, put it to her ear and yelled “hi da!” Who’s to say whether that was real or a coincidence?
