We had our Valentine's party at Mommy and Me today. It was quite a bit of fun. First the kids decorated boxes to be their mailboxes, then we had our potluck. I made pecan bars for the moms and they were well received. I was able to bring some home so we now have some treats here. After the potluck, the kids lined up outside and went in a few at a time to put their valentines in all the mailboxes. Some people needed to have made a bigger slot on those boxes though, I spent a lot of time trying to stuff our cards into tiny slots.
Tabitha had been hoping to fly her kite today, but after the last two days of wind, it was very calm today. So she opted for the playplace instead. Once we got home she and I decided to do a quick math lesson and that's where we hit a wall. She's having trouble with memorizing three of the doubles facts (7+7, 8+8, and 9+9). We talked about it a bit because I wanted her to understand that we don't have to move forward if she's not ready. But I also want her to realize that some things are just harder than others. Three weeks ago she didn't know 4+4=8, but now she does because she worked at it. She gets that and we came to the decision to stop all lessons and just work on the doubles. Part of it is my fault. I've been doing the lessons with her, but have kind of been leaving out the practicing aspect. So we played a matching game with the doubles facts and in the end she was remembering them all. But I let her know that she very well have forgotten one or two or even all of the facts tomorrow and that's okay because we'll just practice again. She's got that wonderful only child perfectionism streak in her, boy do I know it well. It's hard to get her to not be so hard on herself and reassure her that it's okay to not be perfect at everything and that she doesn't need to get so frustrated. ::sigh:: It's not easy being a kid...... or a mom :)
