02/09/2004 Archived Entry: "Fun with wooden spoons"

My child has stolen my wooden spoons. First she sat in her chair and used them as oars. Then she put on her robot mask she made a couple days ago and used them as arms. Now she is taping feathers to them and wants to go outside. I'm guessing she's about to be a bird. Aah, the creativity of young children :)

Lessons today consisted of writing the entire alphabet, both upper and lower case letters. She actually did much better than I anticipated, the only letter that didn't look right was upper and lower case Y. She still mainly uses capitals when writing stories or notes, but it's nice to know she *can* write the lower letters as well. We also did math, of course. No map skills or animal unit though, as she had already written enough. I don't want her getting burnt out. Not likely though, a good punishment for her would be saying "no lessons today." I try to pace her with the writing so her hand doesn't get cramped, but she just goes and writes on her own when lessons are over anyway, unless she's pretending to be a bird that is ;)

Right now the house smells divine. I've got tomato soup in the crock pot and the aroma is making me wish it were closer to dinner. We'll also have some dijon potatoes to round out the meal. It's still chilly here, but we've been leaving the doors open trying to invite some sunshine in.

I'm going to make a list of places we always say we want to go, but never do. Just here in SoCal, I'm not talking vacations. Every week when Chris is off work, we go out. But we usually just go to a mall or Disneyland and occasionally the zoo. There is so much to see and do here, but we always do the same ol' same ol'. For instance, Tabitha has been begging us to take her to an art museum. Norton Simon is maybe 20 minutes away and yet, we don't take her. So I'm going to make a list of all the places we want to go and their associated costs and then every other week we can just pick one and go do it.
